How to Create a New Business Page on Facebook

A Facebook Page is created from a personal Facebook profile. There is no way around that, and it is the part people object to most. Your profile is only used to prove a real human is behind the Page; the two stay separate, nothing from your Page appears on your timeline, and you can add other admins afterwards so the Page does not depend on you alone.

Whoever creates the Page becomes its first admin. If that is a summer student or a contractor, the business is one awkward conversation away from losing control of its own Page. Create it from an owner’s or manager’s profile, and add a second admin the same day.

Before you start

Have these ready. Doing it in one sitting is much less painful than coming back to a half-built Page.

  • Your business name, exactly as you want it displayed.
  • A category. Facebook allows up to three; start typing and pick from its list rather than inventing one.
  • A short description, up to 255 characters.
  • A logo, square, at least 176 pixels on each side.
  • A cover image, roughly 820 by 312 pixels.
  • Your website address, phone number, email, opening hours and address if you have a physical location.

Steps

  1. Log in to Facebook on a computer. This is much harder on a phone and worth avoiding.
  2. Find Pages in the left-hand menu, then choose Create new Page.
  3. Enter the page name and category, and write the description. A live preview appears beside the form so you can see how it will look.
  4. Upload the logo as the profile picture and the banner as the cover photo, then save. Both are technically optional and both are worth doing before anybody sees the Page.
  5. Add an action button. This is the prominent button visitors see: Book now, Contact us, Call now, Send message, Shop now and so on. Pick the one thing you most want a stranger to do.
  6. Fill in the About section: website, phone, email, hours, address. This is what feeds Facebook’s search results and what people actually read before contacting you.
  7. Add a second admin before you close the tab.
Instagram connects to this later, and it is one job rather than two. Once the Page exists, your Instagram account links to it through the same Meta business portfolio, which is also how we get access to both at once. Do not create a separate Instagram business setup; it makes the connection harder rather than easier.

Then tell us

Send us the Page address once it is live and we will do the rest of the setup with you: connecting Instagram, granting our access properly, and getting the business portfolio structured so it survives staff changes. Our guide on adding a user to your Facebook Pages and ad account covers the access side, and it is the step that most often needs a second attempt, so set aside ten proper minutes for it.

If it does not go to plan

  • A Page for your business already exists. Very common, usually created automatically from check-ins years ago, or by a former employee. Do not create a second one. Tell us and we will look at claiming or merging instead, because two Pages split your reviews and confuse customers.
  • Facebook will not accept your category. It only accepts categories from its own list. Choose the closest match; it has very little effect on anything.
  • You do not have a personal profile and do not want one. Understandable, but there is no route around it. The usual answer is that an owner creates the Page and immediately adds the people who will actually run it.
  • Meta has moved the menu. It does, roughly annually. The destination is stable: you are looking for the list of Pages you manage, and a create option within it.

What we need if something fails

Which step you reached and what the screen said. If Facebook has told you a Page with that name already exists, send us the name and we will find it.
