How to Add a Credit Card Payment Method to Your VM Account

Your Vigilante Marketing account has its own login at vigilante.marketing/my-account, separate from your website’s WordPress login. It is where your hosting and retainer subscriptions live. Adding a card is two jobs, not one: you save the card to your account, and then you attach it to each subscription. Doing only the first is the most common reason a renewal fails.

We never see your card number. Card details go straight to our payment processor, not to us. Nobody at Vigilante Marketing can read your full card number, and you should never send it to us by email, text or Drive, even if you would rather we did the typing.

Part one: save the card

  1. Log in at vigilante.marketing/my-account. Forgotten the password? Use Lost your password? on that same screen; it is a different password from your website login.
  2. You should land on your account dashboard. If not, use the person icon in the top right and choose My Account.
  3. In the menu down the left, open Account, then Payment Methods.
  4. Choose Add payment method.
  5. Enter the card number, expiry, CVV and postal code, then Add payment method again to save it. The card now appears in the list showing only its type, last four digits and expiry.

Made a mistake? Use Delete beside the wrong card and add it again. There is no way to edit a saved card, and no harm in deleting one.

Part two: attach it to your subscriptions

  1. In the left menu, open Billing, then Subscriptions. Each active subscription is listed with its status, next payment date and monthly total.
  2. Open the subscription, then choose Change payment under Actions.
  3. Select the card you just saved, or Use a new card if you would rather enter a different one, then Change payment method.
  4. You are returned to the subscription. Check that Auto renew is switched on and that Payment now reads via credit card rather than via manual renewal.
  5. If you have more than one subscription, repeat for each. Saving a card does not attach it to anything by itself.
“Via manual renewal” means nothing will be charged automatically. That is the state to look for and fix. A subscription set to manual renewal does not fail loudly; it simply waits for a payment that never comes, and the first sign of trouble tends to be a service interruption rather than a warning email.

When your card expires

Cards expire and processors do not always update them for us. Two or three weeks before the expiry date on the card, add the replacement and repeat part two for each subscription. It takes about two minutes and it avoids a lapse in hosting, which is the thing that takes a website offline while everyone works out what happened.

If it does not go to plan

  • The card is declined. Usually the postal code, which has to match the billing address your bank holds, or an online purchase block on a business card. Your bank can confirm in a minute; we cannot see the reason.
  • You cannot log in. Check you are on the my-account page rather than your website’s wp-admin. They are different systems with different passwords.
  • No subscriptions are listed. Either the invoicing is arranged directly rather than through the site, or you are logged in with a different email from the one on the account. Ask us and we will tell you which.
  • Auto renew will not stay on. That normally means no valid card is attached to that subscription. Work back through part two.

What we need if something fails

Which of the two parts you reached, and the exact wording of any message on screen. Never include the card number, the CVV or a photo of the card. Last four digits are plenty for us to identify which card you mean.
