When you make updates to your website and the changes don’t appear immediately, caching is usually the reason. Caching helps your site load faster by storing a saved version of your content, but sometimes it can show an outdated version.

To fix this, you may need to clear several types of cache. This guide will walk you through how to do it.

Types of Cache You May Need to Clear

There are three main types of cache that can affect how your website loads:

  • Website Cache – Stored by a plugin (like Hummingbird) inside WordPress.
  • Hosting Cache – Stored on the WPMU DEV servers (object and static cache).
  • DNS/Edge Cache – Stored by external services like Cloudflare (if enabled).

Each one plays a role in speeding up your site, but can also prevent updates from showing right away.

Clear Website Cache (via Hummingbird)

If your site has the Hummingbird plugin installed, follow these steps to clear the website/page cache:

    Steps:

    1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
    2. In the left sidebar, locate WPMU Tools and Hummingbird. Then go to Hummingbird > Caching.
    3. Look for the following sections and check each cache you want to clear:
      • Page Cache
      • Cloudflare Cache (if enabled)
      • Gravatar Cache (if enabled)
      • Asset Optimization Cache (if enabled)
      • Varnish Cache (if enabled)

Clear Hosting Cache (WPMU DEV Object and Static Cache)

Your WPMU DEV hosting account includes server-level caching. This includes:

      • Object Cache – speeds up database queries.
      • Static Cache – stores static versions of your pages.

To clear these caches, you need access to the WPMU DEV Hub.

Steps (if you have Hub access):

      1. Go to https://wpmudev.com/hub and log in.
      2. Click on your website.
      3. Go to the Hosting tab in the left-hand menu.
      4. Click Tools.
      5. Find the sections for:
        • Object Cache – Click “Flush Cache”
        • Static Cache – Click “Flush Cache” (if available)

Note: If you don’t have access to the hosting dashboard, we can add you or clear the cache for you—just contact us.

Note: The object cache should only be cleared if absolutely necessary. It is usually not needed except after making direct database edits or during development. If you aren’t sure, contact us and we’ll help you out.

Clear Cloudflare Cache (if your site uses it)

If your website uses Cloudflare for DNS or CDN, Cloudflare may be storing cached versions of your pages on its network.

        Steps to purge Cloudflare cache:

        1. Go to https://dash.cloudflare.com and log in.
        2. Click on your domain name.
        3. In the top menu, go to the Caching tab.
        4. Click the button that says Purge Everything.
        5. This will remove all cached versions of your site stored on Cloudflare’s edge servers.

Note: If you don’t have access to your Cloudflare account, just let us know and we’ll take care of it for you.

        Troubleshooting Tips

If you’ve cleared all the above caches and still aren’t seeing changes:

        • Try viewing the page in a private/incognito window.
        • Clear your browser cache.
        • If you’re using a caching plugin other than Hummingbird (like WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache), check its settings as well.
